King Edward The Sixth’s Grammar School (New Street) The Foresters’ Guide to Birmingham and Its Neighbourhood 1883

This is a very beautiful building, and always attractive to visitors. The school was founded by a Charter of Edward VI., in 1552. The present building is the work of Sir Charles Barry. The style is Gothic, and there are seven ranges of windows in the front. It was begun in 1833, and the building and furnishing cost £67,000. A new scheme for the management of the school was adopted in 1878, and the work now being done is of the utmost importance in the education of the town. A large number of men of eminence have received their education here; the present Primate of England was a King Edward’s scholar. Several excellent branch schools in connection with the foundation have been opened in different parts of the town.
