The Foresters’ Guide to Birmingham and Its Neighbourhood 1883
There is no mention of a church in Doomsday Book, but doubtless Birmingham possessed one at that time. The tower is said to date from the year 1280, and the old spire from 1300. In 1330 Walter de Clodsdale obtained a license to found a Chantry to maintain one priest to say mass daily for his soul and that of his Wife Agnes. In 1535 the endowments were valued at £10 1s. ; and in 1546 at £11 16s. 3d.
The present church is a good example of conscientious restoration. It is Gothic of the Early Decorated Period; was consecrated on July 20th, 1875, and, including the reredos and west window, cost £32,000.
In 1883 a beautiful stained glass window was placed in the south side of the chancel in memory of the wife of the Rev. Canon Wilkinson, the present rector. There are some fine monuments in the church of the “Lords of Birmingham,” which will fully repay a visit. The restoration is the work of Mr. J. A. Chatwin.
