SUTTON-AT-HONE, a village, a parish, and a lathe, in Kent. The village stands on the river Darent, near Farningham r. station, and 2½ miles SSE of Dartford; and has a post-office under Dartford.
The parish contains also Swanley and Hawley hamlets, and is in Dartford district. Acres, 3,587. Real property, £8,089. Pop. in 1851, 1,290; in 1861, 1,563. Houses, 296.
The manor of St. John of Jerusalem was given, in the time of Richard I., by R. Basing, to the Knights Hospitallers; and belongs now to Mrs. Fleet. There are orchards, hop gardens, and paper-mills.
The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £519. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. The church is chiefly decorated English, and was restored in 1862.
The p. curacy of Swanley is a separate benefice.
There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, a national school, and charities £45.
