Middlesex is bounded, North by Hertfordshire; East by Essex; South by the River Thames, which separates it from Surrey; and West by Buckinghamshire. It is about 23 miles long, and 17 broad. It is divided into the six Hundreds of Edmonton, Elthorne, Gore, Isleworth, Kensington, and Spelthorne; and the three Divisions of Finsbury, Holborn, and the Tower. Rivers: the Thames, the Colne, the Lea, and the New River. There are 4 Market-Towns in this county, and it contains 282 square miles, or 180,480 acres. It is in the Province or Canterbury, chiefly in the Diocese of London, but partly in that of Canterbury. It is in no Circuit. Population, 1,576,636.
