STANDON, a village, a parish, and a sub-district, in Ware district, Herts. The village stands near the Buntingford railway, 6 miles NNE of Ware; was once a market town; and has a station on the railway, a post-office under Ware, and a recent two-arched iron bridge. The parish contains also the hamlets of High-Cross and Colliers-End, and comprises 7,520 acres. Real property, £13,744. Pop. in 1851, 2,462; in 1861, 2,245. Houses, 457. The property is divided among a few. The manor belongs to the Duke of Wellington. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester. Value, £520. Patron, W. Puller, Esq. The church is mainly decorated English; and has a fine Norman W arch, and a tower and spire. The p. curacy of High-Cross is a separate benefice. There are a Roman Catholic college, an endowed school with £55 a year, and charities £132; and the college has accommodation for about 100 inmates, and a chapel.
