TIRLEY, a parish, with Haw hamlet, in Tewkesbury district, Gloucester; on the river Severn, 4½ miles SW by S of Tewkesbury r. station. It has a postal pillar-box under Tewkesbury. Acres, 1,850. Real property, £4,490. Pop., 539. Houses, 129. The property is much subdivided. A bridge spans the Severn at Haw; and was built in 1825, at a cost of £24,349. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. Value, £417. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is decorated English. There are a Wesleyan chapel, a national school, and charities £80.

Tirley Morris Gloucestershire Directory 1876

Tirley is a village and parish in Tewkesbury union, containing, by the census of 1861, 539, and in 1871, 517 inhabitants, and 1800 acres; in the deanery of Winchcomb, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, lower division of Deerhurst hundred, East Gloucestershire; 4 miles south-west from Tewkesbury, 8 north-east from Newent, and 9 north from Gloucester, on the west bank of the river Severn, at which there was formerly a ferry, but it was superseded by a bridge completed in 1825, at a cost of £24,348 18s. 10d. The vicarage is valued at £417 per annum, with residence and 200 acres of glebe land, and is in the incumbency of the Rev. Joseph Frederick Hone, M.A., and the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. The church, dedicated to St. Matthew, is an ancient edifice, in the Decorated style, consisting of nave, chancel, and porch, with low tower containing a peel of six bells. The church was restored in 1875, at the expense of the Earl of Coventry, who is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. There are charitable bequests producing £80 per annum for the benefit of the poor. The rateable value of this parish is £3712.
