Marriages at Naunton 1545 to 1812

Gloucestershire Parish Registers. Marriages. Edited by W. P. W. Phillimore, M.A., B.C.L., Vol XV. Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane, London. 1900.

Author: Phillimore, W. P. W. (William Phillimore Watts), 1853-1913, ed; Blagg, Thomas Matthews.

Note. – The older Registers of this parish, which is styled in the ancient Register Nawnton uppon Cottesold, consists of three volumes.

Volume I contains forty-six perfect parchment leaves followed by one that has been cut out and destroyed. At the end there are eleven perfect paper leaves preceded by three imperfect ones, and five or six that have been destroyed. The leaves are 11 ½ in. by 7 ½ in., and are bound together with leather and thread between oaken boards, one of which is broken. The period covered is from 1540 to 1762, and the entries include Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, with some other matters. It is certain that the entries prior to 1564 were copied from an older book which has perished, and quite probable that the copy was made at a later date.

Volume II is calf-bound, and consists of four blank leaves of paper, followed by twenty parchment leaves, 12 ½ in. by 7 in., containing Baptisms and Burials, but there are two Marriages on page one. There is one blank parchment leaf after this, followed by the remains of twenty that have been cut out, and the Book ends with two paper leaves, the first of which contains entries of Churchyard Fees; the last is blank. The period covered is from 1743 to 1809.

Volume III consists of twelve unbound leaves of printed Marriage forms, containing ninety-six Marriages, dating from 1762 to 1804, and is in perfect order.

The next Marriage entry is in 1813.

These extracts have been made by the Rev. E. F. Eales, Rector of Naunton, and are now printed under his supervision.
