Bokwell, (Gloc.) 3 m. E. from Wotton-under-Edge, in the great road from Gloucester to Bath, is a p. 7 m. in compass, which takes its name from a box-wood, and a well, or spring in it, which runs into the Avon. The manor was held by St. Peter’s-abby in Glocestershire from the R. of William I. to Henry VIII. Sir Walter Raleigh had part of it after the ref. but it has been for these last hundred years almost in the family of the Huntleys, originally of Monmouthshire.

Parish Registers

Marriages at Boxwell and Leighterton 1572 to 1812

Note. – Until recent years, i.e., sometime in the last century, Marriages were celebrated only in the Mother Church of Boxwell. They are now celebrated almost exclusively at Leighterton, as nearly all the houses in Boxwell, except the Court, have been demolished. The parish of Boxwell, with the Chapelry of Leighterton, has now a joint Register, but it is not certain that such was always the case, for two Register books, covering in part the same period, are in existence, which are marked below as “Register A” and “Register B”. There is only one Register, marked “C”, for the period 1754 to 1812.

Register A contains entries of Marriages from 1572 to 1745; it is on parchment leaves, measuring 9 ½ in. by 6 in., and is enclosed in a loose vellum cover. The writing is fairly legible, and it is in sound condition.

Register B is a similar volume, measuring 12 in. by 4 in., extending over the period 1597 to 1754. The writing is similar to the last, and it is in fair condition.

Register C is the only one for the period 1754 to 1812. It is one of the usual volumes of printed forms on paper. It measures 10 in. by 15 in., and is bound in leather, it is in sound condition.

There is much confusion in the way the entries are made, many of them being out of chronological order.

These extracts have been made by the Rev. J. Nowill Bromehead, rector of Beverstone, and the Rev. H. C. Frere, rector of Boxwell with Leighterton, by whose permission they are now printed.
